Most FIRE wannabes are trying to get out of their oppressive work situations to pursue something that really matters to them. They feel the solution is to first get a pile of money and then go pursue their dream. The jury's still out on whether or not that works. To paraphrase some people's approach: "I really enjoy doing XYZ and find it rewarding, but you can't make much much money at it, so I'd have to work 45 years before I could 'retire.' Instead, I'll work 35 years at a higher-paying job I hate, so I can retire and then volunteer at XYZ for ten years." |
