McAfee is expanding on its security offerings through the acquisition of Citadel Security Software, a maker of vulnerability management, policy compliance and end point security solutions.

Citadel, whose premier product is the Hercules Enterprise Vulnerability Management Suite, will lend to McAfee's total risk and vulnerability management strategies. McAfee was built on antivirus software, but in recent years has added network- and host-based intrusion prevention (through the Intruvert and Entercept acquisitions), vulnerability and risk management (Foundstone acquisition), network intrusion detection (Preventsys acquisition), as well as a host of other niche security technologies.
