I think it's a great idea!
I will say that my parents didn't volunteer when they were working, but they both do volunteer work where they live now.
My mom is on the arts council committee and she knits hats for the local Breast Cancer Society chapter. (She's a two time survivor herself).
My dad manages a rock mine, acts as the art council's CFO, and is helping the historical society restore an old barn.
I volunteer with several groups, and have always planned to do something more structured once I retire (but that won't be for 15 years for me).
There's a website that's called volunteer vacations or something like that (a google search would probably bring it up). I've thought about doing a few of those, even while I'm still working.
