What's a Swamp Cooler???
Evaporative cooler. A fan pulls air through something wet and blows the air into the house. These things work just fine in really dry climates. We had a big one on the roof when we lived in Lubbock (west Texas) about 20 square feet of pads made of something that resembled hay, with water trickling down to keep the pads wet.
i had them in Arizona..... in my experience, they need VERY dry... worked fine in Tucson, not so well in Phoenix.
...... interesting ecological trade-off. Uses much less electricity than A/C ...but uses alot of water .... and places with dry climates tend to be short on water.
