Evaporative cooler. A fan pulls air through something wet and blows the air into the house. These things work just fine in really dry climates. We had a big one on the roof when we lived in Lubbock (west Texas) about 20 square feet of pads made of something that resembled hay, with water trickling down to keep the pads wet.

Cool. Never heard of them before. Is it better than A/C? Cheaper?

I never actually had A/C in a home of mine til I lived in Georgia. Now living in Texas I can't imagine not having A/C.

;)
