There's so much more to this issue than cost -- Medical science can keep people alive who would in years past have died peacefully in their beds. With no political intent, just because we all have the same reference: Terry Schiavo for example.

Most of us eventually have to make awful and terrible decisions about whether loved ones can be allowed to die or whether "treatment" should be continued beyond any hope of recovery.

I expect that the man in the example had reasons for his actions that went far, far beyond money, although that might have been part of the equation.

Someone has already described this kind of situation as "sad" and that simple word is the only one that really describes it.
