Culturally, Indianapolis has nice attractions (symphony, children's choir, museums, fine dining, etc.).
Yeah, the Children's Museum is very nice, as are the other museums.
Keep in mind that Carmel is often the butt of jokes because it's where the stuck-up rich people supposedly live, much like Scottsdale, AZ.
Of course Chicago's only ~4 hours away and that should have just about anything you might desire.
It's a long 4 hours, not a drive you'll make on the spur of the moment.
