For me, in large part, it was a way to vent the anger I had inside but couldn't express safely. This was not a conscious choice at the time and becoming conscious gave me the opportunity to change. I recall reading J. Krishnamurti sometime later in the 70's and he wrote that a person does not need to do anything to change, they just have to see how they are. That seems to be what happened for me in this instance :-)
