how do you recognise the difference between "dry wit" and sarcasm?

Dry wit is aimed at a third party who is not present, as when you say upon hearing that Senator Dummy is giving a speech, "Oh, I can't wait for another enlightened and informative analysis."

Sarcasm is aimed at the person you're sarcassing, as when your daughter says "Right, mom, I'm totally going to wear an outfit from Old Navy to the class party."
