Not an answer to your question, but something to perhaps consider....

I am going to assume that, like most couples in the US, you have another vehicle--probably newer.

If this Ford "runs well but needs more and more repairs", have you really looked at the cost of those repairs vs. buying new? At one point we thought we were going to have to ditch our then 12-year-old, 200K-mile Nissan pickup. Instead, put in a rebuilt engine (and other miscellaneous stuff while we were at it) for about $2500. It's now at 20 years and 260K miles (and insurance is considerably lower than new)--pretty cheap 60K miles and still going!!
