Back in the '80s, Thomas Thompson wrote a novel titled Celebrity and one of the main characters, a journalist, becomes involved with a playwright. He asks her about the play that made her famous and she tells him she had read a short news snippet about some domestic tragedy and it inspired her to write that play.
Yesterday in Needham two strange tragic events took place at nearly the same time, withing a couple of miles of each other. In one, a man who was installing a lawn sprinkler at a house beat to death the 78-year-old owner and injured the man's DIL. The assailant's neighbors were all shocked, saying he was a quiet family man.
Meanwhile, in a nearby pizza parlor, a man in a dark business suit walked in, ordered a pizza and a drink, then started acting suspiciously. He dove under the table when the police arrived and there was a standoff for about an hour.
We never seem to find out the details of things like this once the initial sensational coverage is over, but it sparks the imagination for a story. Cell phones seemed to be involved in both cases, so it's almost like Stephen King's horror novel Cell, or maybe some accidental release of a mind altering gas that made people become violent. Mr. Pix speculated that the irrigation guy showed up to install the lawn system and found out the guy was responsible for some awful incident in his past and was exacting revenge.
I wonder if we will ever find out the real stories?
