And, of course, the opposite is true, and one realizes a capital gain.

Not all of us can 'hold to maturity' no matter what. Family things happen that require a sale sometimes.

Also, buying the fund requires far less money to 'get started'. And one can add to the fund monthly as funds are available without having to come up with $1000 minimum.
