What improved productivity should do is allow us to have important things for less.

From a population size standpoint, this is a recipe for disaster. And what's important? Cheap gas? Cheap transportation? Cheap food? A large house or apartment? We already know what "free" does to populations; it's only necessary to remember "Welfare". We don't really want to put the whole population on Welfare. Unfortunately, there are a number of examples in the world where the complete population is on welfare - mostly in the Middle-East. Productivity goes to zero, and so doe the availability of jobs. The lack of jobs and anything constructive to do is a two-pronged destructive force unless you do away with all the teenage boys.
