But people don't need to keep making more and more money and businesses don't need to keep making more and more money for everyone to be able to afford a lot of stuff, because increased productivity has made it cheap.

Never discount human nature when talking about humans. Back in the late 90s when cellphones were large and very expensive, I read about an automobile accident in Peru. The guy was "talking" on a wooden replica phone on his way to work.

We do need these things (include list of whatever's fashionable), moreso when we're young. I know that I still need my motorcycles, though I can't ride them much, anymore. It connects us to our fellow men. For the reasons I mentioned in my previous post, it's counterproductive if they're too cheap.
