"We are no longer near the top of the world in terms of a well-educated population, especially in science."

Loki, I know you are right. For the long term health of the country, we need to encourage more to go into science and technical fields. But we also need to pay them well and take good care of them when they do. Putting them out to pasture early and having them driving taxis has a predictable result. If business values these skills, their treatment of them will show and will bear fruit. If they say one thing and do another, we know how to read those tea leaves.

In the meanwhile, we have a tremendous reserve of early retired scientists and engineers who would be delighted to pursue some problems in the national interest--if only they are properly rewarded.

You cannot expect them to work cheap and certainly not for nothing. We are ON STRIKE!!
