I'm housesitting and using a computer that can't display pdf files and won't let me install a plug-in.

You can get around that in some cases by using Gmail to parse the PDF and turn it into text for you. You have to still download the PDF, save it somewhere, bring up gmail in a browser, attach the PDF in an email to yourself. Then when you go to browse your inbox, gmail gives you the option to either download the attachment or to show it as a web page.

(Of course this is probably more work than is really worthwhile for something that can just wait until the next day *but* if you're ever really in a jam, it's a possibility)
