"If things start going very badly for ING do you think I’ll have enough warning so I can get my money out without losing any of my principal?"

That is the essence of the problem. Sadly if things start going badly, there will probably be a run on the bank histeria phase. Most will not be able to get their money out fast enough. So likely your money will be tied up until some source of financing emerges to bail them out. Sometimes private sources can be found (borrowing cash against illiquid assets) or if not then possibly from some Eurobank or consortium.

But if it goes that far, it is too late. And all you can do is wait and hope your money gets covered somehow.

Personally I think ING will be OK, but these days it can be difficult to be sure.
