Can you name the state involved? It would help us figure out if this is a mistake or a quirk in the tax laws.
The state is Alabama and I'm embarrassed to admit I'm eating crow now. I redid the returns (both federal and state) and it WAS correct to itemize for the state though not for federal. However, I did see an itemized deduction (for the state) that seemed a bit sketchy. However, I didn't have all the supporting documentation so I can't say whether it was legit or not.
That said, I did see some stuff on the federal return that has me wondering about its legitimacy but I guess that's neither here nor there. Thanks for setting me straight guys! :-)
