Hello Fools, and Happy Thanksgiving!

I just wanted to take a moment to let you all know that the the Fool announced our annual philanthropy campaign today. As a recap, in the past 12 years Foolanthropy has raised over $3 million – with the help of our community – for a wide range of worthy causes. In 2007, we narrowed our focus to financial literacy, specifically.

This year, we’re switching things up again and focusing on volunteerism. The Fool has “adopted” a local D.C. public charter school by pledging to make a generous donation and organizing employee volunteers. TMFers will take advantage of various volunteer opportunities throughout the year, as well as teach financial literacy and budgeting workshops to students and parents. And believe us – they need it.

The school, Thurgood Marshall Academy, is located in one of D.C.’s most impoverished neighborhoods where the high school and college graduation rates are the lowest in the district, and among the lowest in the nation. The school serves students in D.C.’s Ward 8, which has the highest rates of poverty in the district in general (36%), and of children in poverty (47%). However, this school must be doing something right … Its mission is to prepare students to succeed in college, and so far it has graduated five classes, and 100% of students in all five graduating classes were accepted to college. We recently visited the school, and I must say, were pretty impressed. Fool writers Dayana Yochim and Jordan DiPietro wrote a summary of our visit here:

As Dayana expresses, maybe a handful of Fools teaching money lessons in one D.C. public charter school can’t save the next generation from the financial missteps of the previous ones. But student-by-student, we’re going to do our best. And you can help too. We hope that the Fool community will be inspired by our volunteer efforts, and contribute in their own local communities – whether it be at a nonprofit focused on financial literacy, or any worthy organization.

And there’s still a way that all Fools can be involved in our Foolanthropy campaign: For every discussion board post, blog post and blog comment, and article comment you make throughout the campaign (Nov. 25 through Jan. 8), we'll add another $0.10 to our campaign pledge. At the end of the campaign, we'll give the entire amount -- up to $20,000 -- to the school.

So please, feel free to reply below! Use this opportunity to discuss the importance of financial literacy, volunteerism, and the ways you’re giving back to your own community. We’d love to hear what you have to say!
