Even though you may be disappointed by you return so far, in a bizarre but true sort of way having bad years early in your invest life is actually a good thing since you get to buy more stock for less each year during the accumulation phase of your investing lifecycle.

To really measure your performance you need to compare your portfolios return to a comparable index to see if you are able to beat the index or not.
