My mom found some of these in a gift shop at some historical site and I've been reading them. They're a series of books that have interviews (mostly taken in the 1930's by the WPA) with former slaves. The books are from the Real Voices Real History Series from Blair Publishing.

This book is especially good

because many of the interviews in it were conducted by African American students from Fisk University, whereas the interviews in other books were conducted by white people working for the WPA, so there was less holding back from the ladies and gentlemen being interviewed.

And it appears that there are a lot of the slave narratives available online

and project gutenberg has a bunch of the WPA narratives available as free ebooks http://www.gutenberg.org
