Hope this is the right place.

Did my taxes in Turbo Tax over the weekend. Now I have a HDHP plan with an HSA. When I enter my income in that part of TT, it asks me the employer contribution to the HSA, my paycheck has all that was put in, not just the employer subsidized part, but that plus my contributions. Anyway, enter that number in, and my refund goes to taxes owed, strange.

Then, when I get to deductions, it asks how much of the HSA I used, I give the number. That lowers my tax owed into the refund territory.

I am confused, I thought that money was not taxable, but it seems that when it is deducted from my paycheck, it is taken out before taxes, then I file my taxes, and it becomes taxable until I say how much I used. Now, if I don't use it all that year, the part I don't use is taxable?

Am I making sense?
