Check out the First Robotics program in your area.
I volunteer for them. They are national. They have robots in three size ranges. The largest are lawnmower sized. The smallest are shoebox sized. And they have programs for all ages.
Teams of students design and build robots. They learn design, computer controls, mechanics, wiring, problem solving, teamwork, and they make it fun.
I have been volunteering as a robot inspector for 7 years. I highly recommend the program.
