This wasn't a frost free fridge...

the humidity wound up INSIDE the fridge and you had to scrape it off the coils and sides.

Unless you were scraping an inch or two of ice per week, I doubt the ice buildup removed much water from the basement. Certainly not as much as a dehumidifier would remove. Therefore, I don't think the old refrigerator was a good dehumidifier.
