Some universities make it very difficult to ever obtain a PhD.

My BIL took five years to get his PhD at a very competitive math program, and his oldest daughter took eight at another competitive school, but she stopped for a year to catch her breath. What took so long was getting the thesis finished, because the research was not coming together. When everything finally clicked it took less than a year to finish.
