Virtually nothing we do in modern society is done the way it was done a thousand years ago. Better ways have been found. Can education really be that different that we accidentally had the right answer in the middle ages?

I beg to differ.
While many tools have evolved, basic principles are eternal.

And of course Socrates lived ~450BC.
