CCSand,

Apparently, it is quite expensive. This may depend on the size of the parish and what needs to be accomplished, acoustically. One local parish is talking about an expense in the tens of thousands of dollars.

FWIW, my son's school had a similar issue. They went cheap and you can definitely tell.

In audio electronics, there are three tiers -- cheap, midrange, and top end. The top end is indeed expensive, and the cheap equipment is indeed terrible. For most parishes, however, the midrange equipment is quite adequate and reasonably affordable -- the proverbial "sweet spot" in the "knee of the curve" that provides the best "bang for the buck."

The cost of installation of sound equipment is another matter. Pulling wire through a cableways in walls can be a very time-consuming process, so hours of direct labor can add up if one hires professional electricians to do the work. The better solution, in most parishes, is to ask a couple parishonners who are electricians to donate one Saturday to do the installation, with a few additional volunteers to assist in pulling the cables through the cableways and in mounting the equipment.

Another local parish needs to replace it's failing organ. Same thing.

An organ is much more expensive than decent mid-range amplifieers and speakers.
