Although the US has some sugar cane, sugar beets can be raised farther north in much of the US.

The article reports that in North Dakota several groups are considering processing sugar beets or beet juice to ethanol. It sounds like a new venture just getting off the ground. One group plans to revamp a former corn ethanol plant.
