but was disappointed to find that I didn't like it as much as my 2004. It seemed a bit smaller to me, and I was later able to verify that that's because it really is. Plus, it was missing some of the convenient little compartments to stash things that I like in my 04. And since the performance specs were about the same,

compare the dimensions:

dimensions for 2004: http://www.thecarconnection.com/specifications/toyota_prius_...

for 2010: http://www.thecarconnection.com/specifications/toyota_prius_...

They are substantially the same. The 2010 is a bit bigger in some dimensions and a bit smaller in others...mostly fractions of an inch.
When sitting in the drivers seat the 2010 feels a bit smaller because the center console is quite different and feels more like a cockpit.
True about fewer compartments and less space for water bottles in the door, etc. They added more door insulation to reduce road noise...only a regular bottle fits...no big Gulps. If you can get over the difference in the center console, the 2010+ is better in mpg. It is a lot easier to get 55-60 mpg on some trips, regardless of EPA official numbers. And it has EV mode which (mildly) lets you force running on the battery and Power mode which changes the throttle response making you think the car has a lot more power.
