Keep in mind, you can select several kinds of international funds. You can allow the experts to manage a diversified portfolio, or you can focus your investment in Europe, South America, Asia, etc., or even specific countries Canada, Australia, etc.

There is money to be made picking the right investments in Europe, but you need the experts to pick the right ones. High yield can mean high risk. Plus experts must factor in exchange rate risk. To me Canada and Australia are much less risky. Germany or UK could be OK.
