I would try renting a carpet cleaner. It will do a good job of sucking the water out of the carpet. You don't have to clean the carpet but you may also want to consider rinsing the carpet with the carpet cleaner if the washing machine overflow contained any laundry detergent in it. It would be the detergent that would give food to the mold to form.
