Might be of interest for those developing a diversified,
large cap portfolio-

I took the top 10 stocks (by weight) in each of the
9 sector ETFs and wanted to see which
ones could beat the SPY ETF in the
following categories:

1 year, 3 year, 5 year, 10 year and 2000 to date returns.

Also as a bonus, they had to beat
the SPY during the 2000 downturn and the 2007 downturn.
(I looked only at year over year numbers, not drawdown).

These shown below accomplished the above
or next best if there
was no clear winner for a sector.

I only picked one stock per sector, even if there were
multiple winners.

         TOP
TICKER	STOCK	SECTOR

XLB	PPG	MATERIALS
XLE	XOM	ENERGY
XLF	SPG	FINANCIAL
XLI	MMM	INDUSTRIAL
XLK	VZ	TECHNOLOGY
XLP	CL	CONSUMER STAPLES
XLU	NEE	UTILITIES
XLV	GILD	HEALTH CARE
XLY	DIS	CONSUMER DISCRETIONARY

Note that XLP was the only sector ETF that beat the SPY on
all of the desired criteria.

Some other challengers-

AAPL- Technology
T- Technology
ESRX- Health Care
ABT- Health Care
CVX- Energy
USB- Financial
AEP- Utilities
COST- Consumer Staples
MO- Consumer Staples
