There is, of course, more in the "expense" column than just the professor, but your point is very well made. Public and private colleges and universities are "selling" so much more than education.

It's the EXPERIENCE of college, the lifestyle, the socialization - the whatever. Building newer and better dorms, to be apartments or condos rather than dorm rooms, building cottage communities rather than dorms, including tanning beds, pools, and so many other luxuries - that they then then have to pay for by requiring students to live on campus.

We're raising very entitled young adults, who choose a college based on the lifestyle, rather than the education, so colleges have to compete. So costs to students go up to pay for all the extras that schools shouldn't be involved in anyway.

The largest state university here in my state didn't even bother building the apartment complex - they "partnered" with an apartment management company, who built the apartments, while the school's contribution was to require students to live "on campus" so that the apartments would all be rented, all the time.

Great deal for the apartment company, great deal for the university, BAD DEAL for students and those who have to pay the bills.
