But they also don't need to build thr Taj Mahal as a student center, or luxury apartments either, which all cost far more than the basic concrete block dorms of long ago to sustain and maintain.

It seems that as a college/university/law school, you have to build these things to get higher/remain on the ranking lists.
It's a very unfortunate kind of competition going on in the education sector, causing incredible tuition inflation (at twice the level of general inflation) while producing no commeasurate gains in education quality.
I wonder where it will end.
