Professors have to have enough students in their classes to pay their way. And while I understand that one of the points of tenure is to free professors to do research and write books and so on,

You understand incorrectly.

When you get down to it, tenure really doesn't mean a whole lot other than as a status symbol. Some people think a tenured prof is guaranteed a job, but I've never seen/heard of that happening.

As for writing books and doing research, you get temporary "course relief" - i.e. you teach a reduced number of classes for some agreed upon time.
