I had been under the impression that the surviving spouse continued to collect 50% of the deceased's SS. I guess that's an incorrect impression. It was. The surviving spouse gets the greater of his/her own benefit or the late spouse's benefit. There's also that ~$250 death benefit. Don't spend it all in one place.
