He was addicted. After the cancer diagnosis, he cleaned up his diet and went vegan and avoided refined foods. Started getting remarkably better. Then because he 'felt' good, thought he could stray a little. In one weekend, went back to his old ways of ice cream and sweets. On Monday, he was back in the hospital. On Wednesday, he was dead.

Personal opinion: If he was doing that remarkably better, he wouldn't have died that quickly.

Refined sugar isn't good. Malnutrition that frequently goes with high sugar intake creates problems.

When my father was in hospice, I was told that the cancer was taking all nutrients. Cancer doesn't just take sugar. He was going to die of malnutrition regardless of his diet.
