So, should I just keep my mouth shut about these expensive (yeah, she got it on sell . . . .' or, 'its the only one the kids will eat') in my opinion, products . . . or is this an important part of our food budget that we could save money on and therefore it should be discussed? Somebody mentioned before, branded products vs. generic, no big deal.
If you and your wife were capable of calm and practical discussions, this would be reasonable to discuss. Previous emails are showing that you significantly over estimate the cost of items that annoy you. If you start by attacking, I don't see this going well. You need to gain credibility and the two of you need to relearn how to talk with each other. You are assuming it will start a fight, and given the current situation that is likely correct.
Have you seen your pastor yet?
Before attacking specific items, you need a better feel for the cost of specific items and what your family uses in a normal week.
Start by studying the grocery receipts. Are these items that were bought once and not used, are they bought on sale (the reason for the different brands), were coupons used, or are they frequently being bought at normal price (making them a good candidate for replacement). You could help obtain and organize coupons.
Lara had very good suggestions for planning and managing food costs.
Study and ask.
If the reason for the soft drinks is to give one of the daughters some additional calories a few times a week, there are healthier alternatives such as hot cocoa made with milk.
Are the individual yogurt containers used for school lunches? Is enough being used to buy larger containers and pack in reusable containers?
