I wish my parents had taught us to speak German. They talked German with each other but switched to English when we were around. They wanted us to be 100% American. We were all born during and right after WWII and there was a lot of anti-German sentiment so they didn't want us be thought of as German. I was still sometimes called "Nazi" by some kids when I was growing up. Art I'm jealous of my Italian cousins who can speak and read and write in Italian because I can't. My dad was Italian but my mom wasn't, so I didn't grow up hearing it spoken at home. I only managed to pick up the odd word or phrase from my dad and grandmother. Maybe someday I'll get around to learning Italian. |
