Phil - I can't answer #1 - re Pub 590 directly. The financial advisor is a wing of an accounting firm. Suposedly the accounting firm said yes. The question of have ducks in a line was asked by me. On the 1099-R there are these boxes. "Taxable amount not determined" checked; "Total distribution" not checked; "IRA/SEP/SIMPLE" checked When Schwab was asked, they said they do not make tax decisions for clients or give tax advise.
