If your wife likes to play Words With Friends, Solitaire, or other such games, I find a stylus is a must-have. It's so much easier to move cards and pieces around the screen than using a finger (especially if I'm letting my nails grow). The first ones we had ran about $12 each, but I just found a 4-pack on Amazon for $3.75. You can find them under Kindle Accessories, but they work just fine on the iPad, too.
