If that's true, why has Islam gone backwards for the past 700 years? While Europe was nestled in the dark ages, Islam was in the forefront of art, music, mathematics, and physics. Have they gone forward from then? I don't think so.

In terms of these things, it seems like Islam didn't necessarily move backward, the forefront moved massively forward without them.

Also, the rise of radical dark-ages sects in the last 50 years or so doesn't necessarily mean the whole religion eschews progress. Those yelling the loudest are clearly trying take the whole world backwards, but not everyone's playing along.
