As some here may have noticed, today is 12/12/12. We won't get another similar sequence for about 89 years (which will be 01/01/01). Well, an interesting thing happened this morning. A near miss by an asteroid we only discovered two days ago**. Not as close as some other recent events, but still close.

...an asteroid passing within just 140,000 miles (only 60% of the distance between the Earth and moon) of our planet? Guess what?... already happened earlier this morning.

And tomorrow comes Toutatis. Close, but in absolute distance a fairly safe 4M miles (about 16 times the distance of our moon). Toutatis appears to be safe for at least 600 years, so don't worry about that one.

But do worry about all the ones we don't see until they're days or weeks away because we don't prioritize and fund finding these objects. We need to know about them DECADES ahead of time if we are to have a chance to intervene in some way. Otherwise we're just a cosmic clay pigeon as Newtonian mechanics yells "PULL!".

**Another worthwhile project for my tax dollars...finding asteroids and figuring out which ones we need to do something about so they don't kill us. Instead of funding farm subsidies, pointless wars, and tax cuts for the 1%.
