Of all the complaints regarding volunteers, the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts were the activities that seemed to have the biggest problems, just going by the volume of hearing of difficulties. I do not know if it is folks are afraid of getting involved and being expected to go to outdoor activities and campouts etc., I really thought it was just isolated to my area, but I wonder if there is some hesitation due to stuff like that-- I know it would not be rational, but heck, a great deal of our hesitation/procrastination in not rational
The time involvement is like having a part time job. Lot's of room to screw up with all that you have to do. When a parent complains about a volunteer, you have to take it with a grain of salt. It's not like they are getting paid.
I was involved in something like scouts via my church called "Boys Brigade". I was already in over my head as a leader/coach in other things so I turned down any leadership role. But a dad was required to go with their son so I did.....we had a blast....DS learned how to be a man; make things with his hands; camped a lot; outdoor activities constantly; the org emphasized Christian character in every way. The amount of work these people put in was extremely commendable. We were in it until DS started JH sports.
