Hi all --

Just got my activation code for this new Google game, Ingress. In case you
hadn't heard about it, it's being branded as a massive alternative reality
game that you play via your Android phone (and a bit online). You can go
here and read a bit if you like:

http://ingressguide.com/what-is-ingress/

It's currently in a closed beta session, but you can request an invite here:

http://www.ingress.com/

...or you can submit some artwork and, if noticed, you may be forwarded an
activation code much sooner than the few weeks mine took.

Once you get activated, you install the app, choose a code name, go through
a brief tutorial on your phone, and choose a side to play for:
Enlightened or Resistance. I don't think it actually matters which side
you choose - game play should be parallel - but it'll be more fun with
friends so get their input first. Reportedly, you are allowed one name
change and one faction change during the lifetime of your account, so
choose wisely.

There's also some phenomenally deeply crafted backstory, online hubs, and
puzzle solving if you want to engage with that, but otherwise, it's one big
(read: Global) game of Capture the Flag meets Scavenger Hunt with online
tracking:

The object of the game is to claim portals and as much landmass as possible
for your team.

Even with the beta status, I'd have to say, I'm having a lot of fun with
it. There are a few glitches and a bit of a learning curve, but it's
very visceral and exciting. If you start playing, you'll never look at
someone texting on their phone the same way again, especially if you're
near a portal.

Cheers!

PS: As correlative investment advice, I'd buy into companies that mfg
solar cell phone chargers and/or Duracell for portable cell phone backup
packs. Nothing worse than being "out in the field" as an agent and on your
last 10% of cell phone juice.
