The phone (RJ) legacy is definitely related to twisted pairs being so phone cabling based. As much as it's big at least anyone with a $20 crimp tool can make one - wouldn't be true for terminating with some mini molded connection like is the case of USB et al. Pros & cons both.

But if that's a concern, they could make a connector that could be as easily attached to the cable but is big in only one dimension rather than two. So you'd still need a wide port on the device, but not a tall one.
