I knew about boatswain and few other nautical words, such as coxswain and leeward, but didn't know about Seuss. Many of these I already knew and had already given in to peer pressure to pronounce them the way everyone else does because I got tired of being corrected, actively or passively. (By someone repeating the word again pronounced wrongly.) Some of the other mispronunciations that bug me: basil (actually, it can be pronounced BAYsl or BAEsl, but I have even been challenged to a bet at Thanksgiving dinner by an upstart son-of-a-friend, whereupon a dictionary was produced and money changed hands.) mischievous (there is no "i" after the "v", people!)
