Perhaps he did not suspect that more would be given or that folks
would take such an unreasonable attitude toward the nutritional
benefits of dog food?

By the same token, the folks who took such an unreasonable attitude
may not have suspected that dog food would make such nutritional
strides.

And no one suspected just how far folks could stretch a squirrel.
