My church supports a missionary to Ghana, too. When he comes back, he regales the congregation with stories about the food. It was a smack in the face at first what he had to eat while living there. I'll ask him about this rat next time I see him.
He said, "Most people pray before the meal. I routinely prayed during the meal. 'Oh, God, please protect me from what I'm about to eat'."
When I was in grad school, one of the other TAs was from Ghana. At first I couldn't understand him, but after a couple of weeks I could. That's when I realized he was telling non-stop jokes. Impressive. It's really hard to tell jokes in a foreign language. From CC's example it seems to be part of the culture. I like that. Vietnamese have a weird sense of humor, too.
