Paul wrote Cruise ships also have helicopter landing pads, where they probably could have brought in a sizable generator to provide additional power. But are they wired to accept such a hook-up? And could such a generator be secured to avoid pitching in the sea?

NBC Nightly News at some point in this showed video or a large lift helicopter delivering a generator. This was before tugs started the return trip. They must have had some ability to connect it, because the fire prevented the normal generators from functioning and at the time of de-embarcation one elevator was working. It takes a great deal of power to run AC for a city of 4,000 people - not to speak of moving water and waste.
